Expertise and Professional Background

Colin Riegels is Managing Partner of the BVI office and Global Head of Banking and Finance. His practice encompasses advising leading financial institutions and other clients on a wide range of credit and security issues. He also advises on offshore structuring and the offshore aspects of premium corporate transactions including mergers and acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures, takeovers and corporate restructurings. His recent practice has particularly focused upon insolvency and distressed debt, credit and security issues and derivatives. Colin has been involved in many of the largest financing transactions involving BVI vehicles, including a number of multi-billion US dollar debt financing transactions and joint ventures.

Before joining Harneys Colin practised as a barrister in London. He was formerly a judicial assistant (clerk) to Lord Woolf MR in the English Court of Appeal, and taught law at Oxford University.

Colin writes regularly on offshore finance and offshore structuring in textbooks and periodicals.  He acts as general editor of British Virgin Islands Commercial Law (3rd ed., Sweet & Maxwell, 2014).  He also writes the British Virgin lslands chapter for Spitz & Clarke’s Offshore Service (Butterworths, 2013), and contributed the British Virgin Islands chapter to Neate & Godfrey’s Bank Confidentiality (6th ed., Bloomsbury, 2015).

Colin is a Notary Public of the British Virgin Islands and is regarded as a leading lawyer in the British Virgin Islands by major legal directories.
